How to Get Coffee Stains Out of Carpet (Step-by-Step)

Spilled coffee on carpet? The next few minutes determine whether the stain comes out. Here's exactly what to do — and what not to do.

By GREENER STEAMER · Columbus, Ohio

Coffee is one of the most common carpet stains — and one of the most treatable if you act fast. The tannins in coffee bond to carpet fibers quickly, so speed matters.

Act Within the First 2–3 Minutes

The faster you move, the better your odds of full removal.

Step-by-Step: Fresh Coffee Spill

1. Blot — don't rub.

Grab a clean white cloth or paper towels. Press firmly and lift straight up. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper. Work from the outside of the spill inward to contain it.

2. Pour a small amount of cold water on the spot.

This dilutes the coffee still in the fibers. Blot again. Repeat 2–3 times until the blotting cloth picks up minimal color.

3. Apply dish soap + cold water.

Mix 1 teaspoon of clear dish soap (not one with bleaching agents) with 1 cup of cold water. Apply to the stain and blot — don't scrub. The soap helps lift the tannins from the fibers.

4. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Remove all soap residue — soap left in carpet fibers attracts dirt over time.

5. Try hydrogen peroxide for stubborn spots.

If color remains, apply 3% hydrogen peroxide (standard drugstore variety) to the stain. Test in a hidden area first — peroxide can lighten some carpets. Let sit 5 minutes, then blot.

6. Place a dry towel over the area and weigh it down.

Leave overnight if possible. This draws remaining moisture and residue out of the carpet as it dries.

Step-by-Step: Dried Coffee Stain

Dried coffee is harder but not impossible.

1. Rehydrate the stain — dampen with cold water to soften it

2. Apply dish soap solution and let sit 5 minutes

3. Blot firmly with clean cloth

4. Try hydrogen peroxide if color remains

5. For old stains, an enzyme cleaner (available at pet stores) can also help break down organic compounds

What NOT to Do

  • Don't use hot water — heat sets protein stains and can permanently bind the tannins to fibers
  • Don't scrub — it spreads the stain and damages carpet fibers
  • Don't use bleach unless you have white carpet and are willing to risk discoloration
  • Don't let it air dry without treating it — the stain will set as it dries
  • When to Call a Professional

If the stain is large, has been there for days, or is on light-colored carpet, professional treatment dramatically improves the outcome. We use professional-grade pre-treatments and powerful extraction that go far beyond what household products can achieve.
