Red wine on carpet is one of the most common carpet emergencies — and one of the most treatable if you act immediately. Here's exactly what to do.
Act Within the First 2 Minutes
The longer red wine sits, the more the tannins bond to carpet fibers. Speed is the most important factor.
Step-by-Step
1. Blot immediately. Use a clean white cloth or paper towels. Press firmly and lift straight up — don't rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper. Work from the outside of the stain inward.
2. Pour a small amount of cold water on the stain. This dilutes the wine still in the fibers. Blot again.
3. Apply dish soap + hydrogen peroxide solution. Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide (standard drugstore variety). Test in a hidden area first — hydrogen peroxide can lighten some carpet colors. Apply to the stain, let sit 5–10 minutes, then blot.
4. Blot until the stain is gone or significantly faded. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.
5. Dry completely. Place a clean towel over the area and weigh it down to absorb remaining moisture. Let it dry fully before walking on it.
What NOT to Do
If the Stain Has Already Dried
Dried wine is much harder to remove but not impossible. Re-wet the area with cold water to rehydrate the stain, then use the dish soap + hydrogen peroxide method above. A professional cleaning will have a much better chance of full removal than DIY at this point.
When to Call a Pro
If the stain is large, has been sitting for more than an hour, or is on light-colored carpet, professional treatment dramatically improves the outcome. We use professional-grade pre-treatments and hot water extraction that go far beyond what household products can do.
